How was your weekend?....Did you watch the Oscars? I love to see the dresses!!!
I was a bit lazy over the weekend, I admit it. I needed some lazy time.
Now, it's Monday and I am off to a good start finishing some new projects! My garage is housing 2 chairs, 2 benches and a cube that all need to be reupholstered...The fabric I ordered for some of these projects arrived on Friday afternoon and I was down right giddy opening the boxes!

I can't remember if I have said this before but I am a NUT for fabric! Solids, prints stripes...you name it, I love them! Right now, like others, I'm a fan of Ikat and I ordered a yard of this beautiful fabric from the Etsy shop Renees Fabrics
I'll get two projects out of this fabric, one I'll show you today and another one will be ready for her debut later this week.
This morning after the kids got off to school I started to work on this bench, another thrift store find. The wood was in great shape but the cushion and fabric were the real problem. I was able to solve that...Here is the before....

This bench is what inspired me to build my "Mudroom Alternative", you can read about it here
I replaced the fabric, cushion and added some new batting.
Since I'm not an expert, I'll spare you an amateur tutorial on upholstery...However, I will give you some tips for upholstering a simple bench and chair cushion that I have learned through trial and error.
# 1...I use a spray adhesive to secure the cushion onto the board.
#2.....I prefer a batting over the cushion to soften the edges.
#3.....When using a patterned fabric always measure the run of the fabric and center accordingly.
#4....I prefer a single folded corner.
I think she fits perfectly in her new home!

I have gone back and forth trying to decide whether to paint it or not....What do you think? Right now, I'm leaning against painting it...The wood is in great shape and in this case I think I prefer the natural color of the wood.
Total cost of this project= $21.75
Bench $4.50
Fabric 1/2 yd. $9.25
batting and cushion appox. $8.00....supplies I already had on hand.
Hope you enjoy!
I"m back to the garage, those projects are calling my name!

ReplyDeleteSo stinkin' cute! In my house, painted would look best, but the wood is in great condition, so it's totally your preference! Where do you get your fabric?
ReplyDeleteLove that fabric! Ohhhh, I love the wood just the way it is. It adds such a nice warmth to your photo :)
ReplyDeleteI love the wood. Don't paint it now, later on you can paint it but I wouldn't now. Loving that material! I am like you I love materials. The bench turned out great. I have an old church bench at the foot of my bed I been thinking about putting some padding and material on it. This makes me want to do it. I am so jelous of your mud room!!
ReplyDeleteLisa, I love your new fabric and the bench! I wouldn't paint it either - I like a little woodsy-ness in a space to balance out the white! But either way I think it's gorgeous! Going to check out that etsy shop now - thanks for the recommendation.
ReplyDeleteLove that fabric, too! (another fabric junkie, here) The bench looks terrific! I'd keep the base wood. It helps it to stand out against the white board and batten. Can't wait to see the other projects. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous fabric!!!! I love it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous! I love the fabric you chose!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job! You made it look so easy. I do like the look of the wood but if you ever tire you have so many colour options. I could totally see a leaf green or a navy blue. Can't wait to see what you're up to next:)
ReplyDeleteI love the bench! I've been looking for one to re-cover for our family room. I'm very impressed that you found that one for $4.50!

Love that fabric!! It's amazing what a change in fabric can do :)
ReplyDeleteCute fabric. I sort of like it unpainted also since it's a nice contract with the white wainscotting. I love fabric, but tend to buy it and then not use it, so I'm on a fabric buying vacation right now.
ReplyDeleteO.K....where did you get that fabric...LOVE it. I know I might be the lone ranger on this one...but I would paint it and really disstress it...but I do that to everything...it looks beautiful this way too!
